10 students from needy backgrounds who studied at Terem sec school in Mt. Elgon Sub County are a lucky lot after they were offered a scholarship to study at the university.
The 10 were given an opportunity to study at the prestigious Presbyterian university courtesy of the institutions vice chancellor Professor Peter Kibas who hails from the region.
Speaking at Terem sec school the school’s principal Ondong Obimba said the noble gesture by the vice chancellor will really help the students pursue their dream careers in different fields.
The principal said some of them were about to give up for not having finances to take them to the university.
“The sponsorship is Ksh. 500,000 per academic year so for the four academic years it will sum up to Ksh. 2 M and for the four academic years it will be 20 million shillings for the 10 students and we really thank him for remembering where he came from” he said.
He challenged other leaders to also emulate Professor Kibas saying he is a benevolent man and only wants to empower the future generation.
He disclosed that the professor who schooled at Terem primary school way back in 1960’s should not be misunderstood that he may be eyeing a political seat saying he only wants to plough back to the society that made him who he is today.
Mr. Ondong further thanked the area MP John Bomet Serut for also helping the school immensely saying he bought them a bus worth 6.5 million shillings and also build a dormitory for the boys saying it will really help the students.
One of the beneficiaries Janet Muku thanked the vice chancellor for offering her the scholarship saying coming from a needy background her parents were not in a position to pay for her university education.
Having scored a B- she is now pursuing clinical medicine saying after finishing her course work she wishes to also help the less fortunate in the society as she was also helped.
Another beneficiary Haman Namaswa said after completing his high school education in 2015 he had no hopes of joining university saying he has been raised by a single parent who was not capable of paying for his fees but now he is lucky to have been sponsored.
One of the parents Justus Wakachunga thanked the sponsor for having identified the children for the sponsorship deal saying many of them would not afford the university education.
He further added that with the region having been affected by the SLDF the children getting a chance to pursue their education will help uplift the society to a better place.
His sentiments were echoed by Terem primary school headmistress Judith Bomji who also applauded the scholarship program saying it is a motivation especially to the girl child in the region who will work hard to overcome the hurdles in life so as to be successful.
