Hamisi, Vihiga County; Residents living near murram and sands harvesting areas have asked the County Government to ban the activity to avert any possible causality that may arise due to the impending El-Nino rains.
They said that even after the county government prohibited murram harvesting in the area last week, some residents are still engaging in that business thus endangering themselves since the area is prone to landslides.
The Deputy Governor Caleb Amaswache had warned those engaging in the activity to stop in a bid to avoid any deaths caused by landslides that may be brought by heavy rains expected in the region.
Joyce Aluda a resident of the area said despite the warning, the harvesting still continues as normal jeopardizing their lives hence the county government should put up strict measures to prevent the activities.
“We are living in fear of slides and our houses have got cracks due to the ongoing murram harvesting in the area,” Aluda added.
Another resident Hebron Kisia said any causality witnessed in the area would be blamed on the County Government since apart from warnings the County Government has not put in place any measures to ensure that the activities stop.
“The workers have been going on with their business as usual despite a ban by the County Government, this dangerous activity is risking their lives yet the County Government has not taken any action to prevent it.” He said.
The residents were speaking to West fm in Banja ward, Hamisi Sub County.
