A dark cloud engulfed Mapengo village in Chekalini Ward, Lugari Sub County following the death of a 27 year old man under unclear circumstances after allegedly consuming illicit brew.
Confirming the incident, Lugari Sub County OCPD Benard Macharia said that reports from reliable sources indicate that before his sudden death, the deceased was last seen at a local liquor den, where he and two others were said to have engaged in a drinking spree competition.
The OCPD warned locals against excessive consumption of alcohol during this festive season especial illicit brew saying that those caught selling or drinking it will be dealt with accordingly.
According to the deceased’s mother, Mrs. Robai Muhanda, after having breakfast, her son, Erick Shikoli, left home ostensibly for a stroll to unknown destination before he was brought back while in a coma at about 10 a.m.
“He was extremely unconscious by the time he was brought home by the boda boda cyclists at about 10 a.m,” revealed the devastated mother, adding that her efforts to resuscitate the son through first aid hit a snag as he passed away.
“Though I’m yet to confirm the people he were with at the local brew, I must, however, confess his body was smelling chang’aa by the time of his death,” said the mother who suspects excessive consumption of the outlawed liquor must have heavily contributed to the death.
The poverty stricken family pleaded with the police department not to carry the body to the morgue, but instead allow it to proceed with burial arrangements.
