Five girls aged between ten and fourteen years have been rescued by Kapyogen area chief after they escaped from early forced marriage at Kaitokom village in Kacheliba constituency.
The girls walked for three days from their village to Pokot south Sub County before they were rescued late in the evening.
The area chief Elijah Lomuton said the girls were found stranded at Chepkono trading centre by a good samaritan late in the evening.
Lomuton said when interrogated on where they were heading to and where they were coming from the girls said they had run away from their homes since their parents wanted to marry them off.
“This is violation of children rights, these girls are too young to be married off,” he said.
The chief said they are liaising with his counterpart in Pokot north Sub County to trace the parents of the children.
“The parents must be arrest and prosecuted since our constitution does not allow early forced marriage,” he said.
Monicah Katatwa who rescued the girls said the girls told her they had walked over one hundred and fifty kilometers before arriving in the area.
She asked parents in the region to value girl child education and allow their girls to further their education.
“It is unfair that these girls have never gone to school. This shows that their parents we busy preparing them for marriage,” she said.
Last week fifty girls who had undergone female genital mutilation and ready to be married off were rescued and later enrolled in school.
Teresa Lokichu who is an anti FGM ambassador in the county asked parents to value education and abandon the outdated cultural practice that hinder development.
