Bungoma County launches Disability Funds
Bungoma county Governor Kenneth Lusaka has launched funds for persons with disabilities so that they can be empowered to do projects that will sustain their lives.
Speaking during the official launching ceremony at Sirisia market, Governor Lusaka said his government will ensure the fulfillment of 1percent set aside for the disabled persons according to the new constitution.
“My government will always recognize person with disabilities, as I said earlier disability can come in any way, so we must take our time, our recourses and energy to help this people who are physically and mentally challenged as the government we will continue supporting them especially when it comes to employment and contracts” said Governor Lusaka.
He revealed that he will appoint a disabled person who will be attached to his office to advise him on matters concerning disability to avoid conmen who have been taking advantage of them to squander their funds.
“We have other people who are pretending to be disabled so that they can take advantage of people with disability, and that’s why I am saying let anything meant for them be managed by themselves, because the shoe wearer knows well where it pinches” he said.
More than 130 groups from each ward benefited from the first release of Shs. 7.5 million to start their own projects like farming and small businesses to help themselves rather than begging.
Lusaka added that his government is planning to purchase enough wheel chairs that will soon be distributed to ensure everybody moves with no difficulty.
On other hand, the county executive committee member for gender, youths and sports Mrs. Grace Khayota said it is the beginning and the regulations have been tabled to the county assembly for the elderly and people with savere disabilities so that they benefit too.
