Mwendwa sidelines from blames over stars defeat
Football Kenya Federation chief Nick Mwendwa has distanced himself from claims that he arm-twisted the Harambee Stars technical bench to have certain players feature in the embarrassing 1-0 Wednesday defeat to Guinea Bissau in an African Cup of Nations qualifier
In a press briefing with reporters on Friday, a calm Mwendwa dressed in casual wear said that the team has a technical bench which is best suited to answer Kenya’s concerns about fielding.
“We have a technical bench which is competent enough. They are people who do the selection and as to why certain players were not picked or picked, they are best placed to answer.” He said.
Mwendwa also jumped to the playing unit’ defense saying the boys had played well despite the defeat.
“Our record in Afcon has never been good. Overall we have played 47 matches; wining just four, losing 30 and drawing the rest. This (the Wednesday qualifier match) being a mid-week in west Africa, getting the players was also difficult and remember someone like Brian Mandela just had two days to train with the team.” He added.
Stars host the West Africans on Sunday in the return leg from 4. pm at the Nyayo National Stadium.
