The JSC has officially kicked off its search for the next Deputy Chief Justice who will replace the retired Lady justice Rawal. This comes just a few days after JSC nominated Hon. Justice David Maraga for the position of Chief Justice. The leader of the majority in parliament Aden Duale has since expressed that as jubilee they will approve his nomination.
The JSC is expected to interview 15 candidates for the position of the Deputy CJ with Lady Justice Abida Ali-Aroni and Justice Agnes Murgor interviewed first.
Justice Abida Ali-Aroni was taken to task over how she would tackle the issue of corruption and clearing of backlog which has for over time been a great challenge for the judiciary.
She mentioned that frequent auditing of the judiciary members for integrity issues will assist in curbing such issues. Her sentiments were also echoed by the Lady Justice Agnes Murgor who faced the panel later in the afternoon. “We need to increase supervision so as to curb inappropriate activities within the judiciary.” Which she described as distance decay.
Harmonization of workers was mentioned as a suitable way for effective management. Lady Justice Agnes Kalekye Murgor who has had a long experience in the private sector and for four years in the judiciary was put to task over how she would apply the skills she has learnt over the years especially in financing and administration.
She stated that she will liaise with the government to get resources by partnering with donors in order to upgrade the face of the judiciary, something which is needed so much.
Both candidates did state that although the work of the deputy CJ is not clearly cut out,they will work hand in hand with the Chief Justice to ensure that matters are handled as per the law.
The panel is expected to continue with the interview for the next 15 days with the hope of finding the best candidate who will not only fill the void left by Justice Rawal but also one who will strengthen the current institutions within the Judiciary.
