Business came to a standstill for several hours in Malaba town, Busia County following a peaceful demonstration by residents over alleged murder of five guards.
Traders were forced to close their businesses over the fear that their property would be stolen after police officers engaged the demonstrators in a running battle to clear the highway that was barricaded by stones.
Led by Teso North Chamber of commerce chairman Fred papa, the residents demanded the immediate transfer of the Malaba OCS Chacha Marwa and the OCPD Onesmas Kombe for laxity.
The guards who were attacked by thugs were rushed for emergency medical attention at the Busia and Bungoma County referral hospitals.
Bungoma hospital medical Superintendent Mayama Magrina confirmed that two guards were admitted at the facility and in critical condition following deep cuts on their bodies.
In Busia referral hospital three guards were also admitted after being referred from Kocholia district hospital according to the Medical Superintendent Dr. David Mukabi.
“The victims are in stable condition but nursing wounds,” said Dr. Mukabi, adding that they are under close attention to ensure they get well.
