Busia Women aspirants for various seats have vowed to show their male counterparts that they are no pushovers in 2017 polls. Speaking during a Leadership and Mentoring workshop for all women aspirants at the Hotel Itoya sponsored by NDI, the ladies said time to relegate them to the periphery and calling them flower girls was long gone.
The women said they managed to get only one MCA seat out of 35 wards in the county in the last elections. “We are determined to get at least 25. We want men to be nominated and not women this time round,” they said.
Busia Women representative Florence Mutua presided over the opening ceremony. The aspirants present included Cynthia Mutere and Maureen Namunapa who are chasing for the woman Rep. position. Others were MP aspirant Mary Makokha (Butula).
Among the MCAs included FIFA instructor Margaret Omondi who want the Burumba ward seat, Marsela Musakhi (Bunyala West), Beatrice Kanoti (Bwiri Ward) and Joan Kubebea ( Mayenje Ward).
Mutua said as pillars of families’, ladies have the strategy on how to get votes. He challenged them not to abuse fellow ladies but to respect themselves and work together.
“In the last elections, no single woman won the governor’s seat. This time, we are sure of winning at least four including that of Kericho, Bomet, and Embu,” she said.
Makokha said ladies shouldn’t be restricted only to Women Rep. seats. She told them to vie for every seat including the governor seat instead of being cowards.
