As the 2017 polls fast approach, Bungoma County residents have been called upon to maintain peace and tranquility within the different communities that live and carry out their different economic activities in this County.
In a youth sensitization seminar with participants drawn from across the entire Bungoma County, Peacenet CEO Samuel Owando said as an organization they are traversing the country to train different groups on how to tackle issues affecting the daily activities of residents relating to peace.
He said it is saddening that the communities of Marakwet and Pokot in Rift valley are involved in clashes and called upon the government through the Ministry of Interior to calm the situation.
He disclosed that in Bungoma County the issues of conflict have revolved around land and water, especially in the Mt. Elgon region. He added that the youth who have been trained have been equipped with the skills necessary for solving issues at the grass root level in their communities.
Nasimiyu Sanja, one of the trained youths, said she is now able to be a mediator between two parties that may be in a conflict. She further said there should be no fighting as we approach the next general elections even if we stand in opposing camps.
She further called upon leaders to also be on the frontline to spread the message of peace among the residents of the County saying they have the responsibility of ensuring peace prevails before and after the next general election.
