Residents of Namakhele village, Kibingei ward from Kimilili Sub County have called for a speedy construction of a water spring serving over ten thousand households in the area to avoid a possibility of a waterborne disease outbreak.
Nura Najma, one of the residents at the village, says the spring was initially constructed but the pipes for drawing water fell off making them use only one pipe, an issue that has strained the large population depending on the water.
She added that some of the residents have already been diagnosed with waterborne diseases such as typhoid especially during the rainy season, saying to avert the outbreak a quick remedy needs to be reached by the stakeholders to help properly construct the spring.
Area political activist Sir Joseph Wamalwa expressed concern over the state of the spring and called upon leaders from the Bungoma County government as well as the national government to move with speed to help reconstruct the spring for the residents.
He said after a consultation meeting with the area residents he approached several nongovernmental organizations as well as elected leaders to come up with a way forward of how to help the residents access clean water at the water point.
Mr. Wamalwa also called upon the Ward Empowerment Committee to consider setting aside funds to construct the spring saying many residents who depend on the spring come from different parts of the town, and being taxpayers, have a right to clean drinking water.
“We are planning on a funds drive in December to help raise funds for the construction and have called all those of good will to come and help raise funds so as the residents will have sufficient water for their daily activities,” he said.
