New IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati has pledged to serve Kenyans faithfully, with integrity and without discrimination. The new Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman has been sworn in officially together with six commissioners, effectively replacing former chair Isaac Hassan and his team. They took oath of office at The Supreme Court in Nairobi on Friday.
He said under his leadership there will be impartiality, free and fair elections, “Those found culpable of election malpractices will face the full force of the law,” he said, citing his intentions to ensure there is a credible general election and adding that all politicians should carry a message of peace to the electorates.
On the other hand, Chief Justice David Maraga was keen to remind the IEBC team of their responsibility, “Your obligation is not to the president who appointed you. It is to the constitution and the people of Kenya,” he said. He added that an election period and process that is well constituted and handled is vital for the stability of a nation.
The six commissioners are Boya Molu, Roselyn Akombe, Paul Kurgat, Consolata Nkatha, Abdi Guliye and Margaret Wanjala Mwachanya.
