Only 1,539,879 Kenyans have registered as voters after the second week of voter registration exercise across the country. This figure represents only 25% of the 6 million voters targeted at the end of the exercise.
This was revealed by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Chairman Wafula Chebukati and he stated that there are counties which have the highest potential to register more voters but have registered few voters till now.
These counties include Vihiga, Nyeri, Bungoma, Kakamega, Siaya, Kisii, Kericho and Kitui.
“This shows that much work should be done in these counties,” cited Chebukati.
He said that the top 10 counties in voter registration include, Kajiado, Mandera, Kirinyaga, Kiambu , Murang’a, Narok, Nakuru, Wajir, Tana River, and Garissa.
IEBC chairman noted that there are reported cases of politicians and aspirants bribing voters so as to transfer and register in different locations for their political interests.
“Such complaints have been received and investigators are on the ground looking into the claims,” reiterated Chebukati.
“Commissioners have resolved to gazette prisons as registration centres. The registration exercise in prisons will commence on 20th Feb and end on 27 Feb 2017 and when voting they will only be allowed to vote for the presidential candidate,” he added.
