The Nairobi High Court has ordered for the extension of voter registration by two days, with the deadline set by IEBC of 14th February already pinned down. The extension has been ordered by Justice Chacha Mwita after a petition was filed by Okiya Omtatah.
Various leaders had urged the electoral body to extend the voter registration process, with Ford Kenya leader Moses Wetangula adding to the clamour, “IEBC intends to register more people but has only managed 2.1 voters, we appeal to them to extend the registration period for people to register,” he said during the weekend.
Voter apathy has been a major challenge during the registration exercise, despite calls from leaders all over the country urging Kenyans to register. IEBC had a set a fixed deadline for the registration, with IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati insisting they were working within the set timeline, and requesting employers and institutions to give workers a day or so off to register if possible.
