Kaimosi Friends University College (KAFUCO) students held a demonstration after two of their colleagues were waylaid and robbed by unknown people. About 100 students marched to the area police station in Jeptulu, Hamisi Sub County accusing the police of laxity in dealing with crime.
The two students who were attacked were walking to their nearby hostels at 9pm when they were ambushed, and the perpetrators stole their mobile phones. According to the school’s Principal Jack Nandi, one of the students was cut by a machete and rushed to the institution’s hospital.
He said this is the fourth time students have reported such incidences and called on the police to act and arrest the culprits. He said about half of the total population stay outside the institution because of few accommodation facilities at the university.
Nandi said about 600 students have rented houses outside the campus and this is a big threat because the students are forced to walk to their rented hostels at night. KAFUCO which is the constituent college of Masinde Muliro University is one of the four universities where smooth learning has been going on despite lecturer’s strike.
He added that the Kaimosi university college has applied for installation of security lights around the campus to improve security and have asked the students to walk in groups to avoid similar attacks.
