Land grabbers in Trans Nzoia County have been told to vacate the public land they have grabbed immediately, or face the full force of law. Speaking in Kitale after inspecting public land in Trans Nzoia County that has been grabbed by some people in the County, the National Land Commission chairman Muhammad Swazuri warned the land grabbers in the County who illegally acquired land.
He singled out land belonging to a Museum in Kitale, which he said has been grabbed by several people who have already erected structures.
Swazuri cited that other portions of land grabbed include prison land, which according to records from the Registrar of Lands is supposed to be 3000 acres. The land that has been grabbed is 2,700 acres, and the Prison department has only been left with 300 acres. He also singled out the Kitale airstrip land which he said has been grabbed by AIC Church. 2 acres of land belonging to The Saiwo School has been grabbed too.
He said the Commission officials will be back in the County next month of and will try to solve all the land problems, especially those pertaining public lands, with the aim of restoring sanity in the County which has been riddled with land grabbing cases.
On his part, Tran Nzoia County governor Patrick Khaemba appealed to the national government to flush out people believed to have gained access and grabbed the land.
The Governor said the county has had serious problems when it comes to the expansion of County headquarters offices as well as the construction of some utilities to help residents because most of the public land has been grabbed.
