IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati has reiterated that the electoral body is working within the set timelines ahead of the elections. “We are working to make sure nothing stops us from giving Kenyans the elections they are waiting for on the 8th of August,” he said. He said this during a press briefing addressing resolutions on a collaboration framework by different agencies to ensure compliance with leadership and integrity requirements in the general elections. “I want to confirm to the country that we are within our timelines and we shall give the country a free, fair election.”
The IEBC Chairman outlined the resolutions made by the partners, who include EACC, DPP, AG, Registrar of political parties, targeting to set up an integrity framework ahead of the general election on August 8th. The resolutions include enforcing compliance with the leadership and integrity requirements by aspirants in the forthcoming general election. Also, collaborating institutions shall give priority to verification of information on aspirants or candidates, may be required by the IEBC in order to complement and support the electoral clearance process.
“The collaborating institutions shall publish ‘Guidelines on Compliance with Leadership and Integrity Requiremts in the 2017 General Elections’, in furtherance of the objectives of this collaboration,” said IEBC Chair Chebukati.
He said the collaborating institutions encourage political parties to nominate candidates who meet the leadership and integrity threshold set out in the law.
