With only a few months remaining before the general elections, the government has assured Kenyans that preparations are going on well and the elections will still be held on 8th August. “Preparations for the next general elections are going on well, specifically operational plans in the departments directly involved,” said government spokesman Eric Kiraithe during a press briefing in Nairobi on Wednesday.
Mr Kiraithe said that the electoral body, IEBC, needs support from the civil society, and all institutions of governance so that they can deliver democratic, credible and peaceful elections.
“With the stewardship of the new IEBC commissioners, the electoral body is working overtime to prepare for the elections and we appreciate them for the commendable efforts in an endeavour to make the process inclusive to the furthest extent possible,” said Kiraithe.
On the ongoing security operation in Baringo, he said the government has deployed security personnel in the area as they seek to restore peace.
Kiraithe warned politicians in the affected areas against using utterances that deliberately misinterpret the concept of fundamental rights and freedom guaranteed in the constitution to imply that some communities are free to pursue their own needs with total disregard to the rights of others.
