Education Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i has been urged to ensure rules and regulations governing the education sector are totally implemented given that the current political activities can affect learning institutions.
The Kenya National Union of Teachers Mt Elgon branch Executive Secretary Stephen Chemonges said the Ministry rules stipulate that the learning institutions must not be interrupted by the political activities and that functions should not be held in the institutions.
Chemonges cited the recent visit by Deputy President William Ruto in Mt Elgon, saying he was set to address residents at Kapsokwony primary school and learning activities at the school were interrupted for the whole day, together with the neighbouring schools.
He added that the rules should apply to all politicians in the country regardless of their status, saying with more of the political activities set to be experienced until the next general election, they need to be cautious to ensure learning activities are not interrupted.
However, he called upon parents to ensure their children do not involve themselves in political activities this holiday season.
Regarding pay rise, Chemonges said they are anxiously waiting for the agreement by the government to be implemented, or else they will stage another strike.
His sentiments were echoed by Bungoma County Private Schools’ Association chairman Henry Brown Wanjala who called upon parents to monitor their children during this period and ensure they have a learning programme for their revision purposes.
He further cautioned the private school directors against implementing holiday tuition saying it is against the Ministry’s regulations. He said the pupils should be given time to rest at home and resume school at the beginning of the second term in May.
