IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati has said the reshuffling of returning officers all over the country will go on. This comes even as opposition coalition NASA continues to scrutinize the electoral body’s preparations for the general election, especially the appointing of returning officers, which they said was done without consultation. While addressing the press during the launch of devolution of electoral services in Narok, Chebukati said the reshuffling will ensure there is fairness during the general elections, “All returning officers are moving away from their home Constituencies and Counties, so that we don’t have someone familiar with the environment being a returning officer in an area.”
He said fairness must be evident, “We can’t talk of fairness if it cannot be seen.” Moreover, Chebukati affirmed that the electoral body’s systems are in place, adding that even verification is ongoing. “Verification of voters is ongoing, and that’s a process towards preparing the complete register,” said IEBC Chair Chebukati. He said that they’ve received several comments and that IEBC should be notified about any integrity issues as we head towards the general election.
