At least seven people are feared dead after being involved in a grisly road accident at Sirende market on Kitale–Eldoret road today. According to Trans Nzoia County Commandant Joseph Ochieng, the accident involved a Nissan matatu plying the Kitale-Nakuru route which veered off the road and overturned after being hit by a canter lorry. A tuk-tuk was also involved in the accident.
He added that they were able to reach the scene on time and rushed the victims to Kitale referral hospital where they are receiving treatment after picking up serious injuries. He added that they were trying to get the names of those involved in the accident before giving a full report about the accident.
According to an eye witness, the Nissan matatu was coming from Kitale heading to Nakuru and upon reaching Sirende market, the driver tried to swerve in order to avoid hitting an oncoming lorry. The lorry driver was also trying to avoid hitting a tuk-tuk. Another eye witness called on the relevant authorities to erect speed bumps and also expand the narrow road. The residents said police officers didn’t reach the accident spot quickly and blamed the laxity shown by the officers, saying they could’ve saved lives.
