Jubilee leaders have castigated their KANU counterparts for disrupting the party’s rally at Makutano town in West Pokot County that was Presided over by President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto. They also want action taken against a police officer who hurled a teargas canister to school children at Makutano primary school when President Uhuru Kenyatta was boarding his plane after the rally.
Speaking at a press conference in Kapenguria, the leaders said it was immature for KANU supporters to disrupt their rally before the President arrived.
Youths with wooden placards from Jubilee party and those from KANU confronted each other for about twenty minutes before the situation was calmed down by security officers at the venue.
Some of the injured youths were rushed to Kapenguria District Hospital for treatment while others had minor injuries.
Led by Governor Simon Kachapin, Kapenguria MP Samuel Moroto and his Pokot South counterpart David Pkossing, they said KANU had planned to disrupt the rally.
They said the function was a Jubilee affair and wondered why KANU supporters forced themselves to the rally with no clear agenda.
“What they did is a shame and that is a clear indication that they have sensed defeat. Why do they force themselves on a rally they know is a Jubilee affair?” posed Governor Kachapin.
Moroto condemned the incident saying it painted a bad picture for visitors who had come with the President.
He called for the arrest and prosecution of culprits who caused mayhem and injured Jubilee supporters who had gone to welcome the President.
“It was unfortunate and immature for leaders to incite their supporters during this campaign period. We want also the police officer who hurled teargas canister at the kids arrested,” said Moroto.
However, Senator John Lonyangapuo who accompanied the President to Konyao in North Pokot said he had the right to attend the meeting.
