COMESA (Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa) has deployed 15 election observers ahead of the August polls, which are less than a week away. Led by Zimbabwe former Justice Minister Ambassador Simbi Mubako, state officials are drawn from Egypt, Eritrea, Malawi, Sudan, Uganda, Congo, Zimbabwe, Zambia and the COMESA Secretariat.
The COMESA Corporate Communications Manager Mwangi Gakunga said the team will observe the vote counting process and the declaration of results and will issue a statement on findings with their recommendations after the elections.
The African delegation will meet key stakeholders involved with the elections, including electoral body IEBC, civil society, security agencies, main political parties and the Judiciary. The observers join other teams of foreign observers in the country-EU observers-who have set out to keenly observe affairs before, during and after the general elections. An AU delegation, led by former South African President Thabo Mbeki, visited the country earlier and paid a courtesy call to President Uhuru Kenyatta and other leaders.
