A family in Kamukuywa, Kimilili Sub County, is in grief after the sudden death of their son who was serving in the military. Elvis Wanyonyi had only served for two months in the army only but succumbed to gun shot wounds while undergoing treatment.
According to his father Emmanuel Musamali, his son had been posted to Kahawa barracks after passing the grade in June this year and he was returning to the camp in the company of his colleague. As they were walking towards the main gate they were attacked by armed robbers and he was shot as he tried to struggle with them.
He says he was informed by a unanimous caller of the incident and he later confirmed that his son had actually been shot. He managed to talk with his son afterward “My son said he had been shot but was undergoing treatment and I travelled immediately to Nairobi in the company of his two younger brothers to check on his progress and find out what exactly happened to him,” he said.
He disclosed that they arrived at the camp and found his son still alive still undergoing medication and said the incident happened a few meters from the main camp gate as they were coming from town a few minutes after 7pm saying his colleague managed to escape unhurt but it was unfortunate that they shot him and escaped.
Mr. Musamali said he left the camp promising to take his boys back home and come back the following day but as they reached Nakuru one of his sisters in law whom he had left in Nairobi informed him of the sad news that his son had passed away.
He says since his son passed away he has not received any official communication from the Kenya Defence Forces saying it is unfortunate that his family has lost a bread winner of which they were all depending on to uplift the family.
Mr. Musamali said he has eight other children, four of them are in secondary school, and his late son had vowed to cater for their school fees saying now his hopes are shattered and called upon the KDF to compensate him saying his son died while on duty.
The sentiments were echoed by his wife who is yet to come to terms with the death of his son saying he had promised to help them uplift their lives after having gone through a lot in their lives.
As they a wait for communication for burial arrangement of the fallen hero residents of Kamukuywa and relatives are visiting the home of Mr. Musamali to condole with them.
