Administration Police officers based at Chamakanga Police post in Sabatia Sub County Vihiga County have been accused of shooting a boda boda operator, leaving him with serious injuries. Boda boda operators from Mago and Shamakhokho held demos over police harassment in the area.
They claimed one of the police officers damaged a motorbike belonging to one of their colleagues. They took their frustrations to the AP camp, and it’s alleged that’s where one of them was fatally shot by a police officer and was rushed to one of the hospitals in Kakamega County. “We came here in solidarity to show our frustrations due to harassment by police officers from the camp. It was a peaceful demonstration and we had no intention of provoking the officers,” one of the operators reiterated.
However, area Chief Henry Mengesa has dismissed those claims saying they had no basis. He said the Police officers were forced to shoot in the air to disperse the rowdy crowd that had surrounded the police camp. “Those are false claims, from what I have gathered, the officers were forced to shoot in the air to disperse the crowd that had converged at the police camp,” he said.
