Religious leaders and business people in West Pokot County on Sunday held special prayers for peace in the country ahead of the repeat presidential elections. The clergy and hundreds of residents from different denominations and tribes living in the County who convened in Kapenguria town insisted that they are not after money but peaceful coexistence.
Led by Agape Church Bishop Andrew Webwana and businessman Mr. George Njoroge who organized the event called on political leaders in the country to deal with the rising political temperatures. “We need a prosperous nation and not a divided one after the repeat polls,” said Bishop Webwana, “Peace campaigns are going on in the whole County.”
The Bishop called on other religious leaders to come out to pray for the country and spearhead a dialogue between NASA and Jubilee leaders, adding that religious leaders have a special role to pray as agents of peace.
They cautioned Kenyans to be wary of leaders who are out to divide the country, “We don’t want ethnicity and hatred in the country,” he said.
On his part, Mr. Njoroge challenged politicians to hold peaceful campaigns, preach unity and shun unnecessary utterances that might plunge the country into chaos.
They called on Jubilee and NASA leaders to embrace dialogue and not divide the country along tribal lines. Some residents who turned up for the prayers urged youths in the County not to be misused by politicians who are after their own selfish interests.
