The nurses’ strike has been called off after the Nurses Union (KNUN), Council of Governors and the Ministry of Health Cabinet Secretary Cleopa Mailu held a successful meeting that led to an agreement on Thursday. Addressing the press after signing documents, Council of Governors Josphat Nanok said the nurses will go back to work on Friday, 3rd November. Nanok was accompanied by other Governors including West Pokot Governor John Lonyangapuo and KNUN officials led by Secretary General Seth Panyako.
He read out the terms of the deal, including allowances, “The uniform allowance in the year 2018/2019 will be Kshs 15,000, which will be increased annually by Kshs 5000 over a period of three years,” said Nanok. He added that the nursing services allowances will be Kshs 23,000 for the financial year 2018/2019 and will be increased by Kshs 3,500 for the financial year 2019/2020.
He further revealed that after thirty days of signing the agreement, the CBA will be concluded and signed, adding that disciplinary cases initiated against the nursing nurses during the strike will be withdrawn, “Salaries will be paid into the nurses accounts by the end of November 2017, and not later than 31st December 2017.”
