Grief gripped Eshikulu village, Nzoia location in Likuyani Sub County after a body of a middle-aged woman was discovered floating on water in an abandoned quarry. Confirming the incident Likuyani OCPD Meshack Kiptum, said the deceased, about 30 years old, was discovered floating on the water by residents living near the quarry.
“The body was discovered by village boys who live near the quarry and normally bath in the quarry,” said Kiptum, adding that the deceased might have slipped and fallen in the quarry.
According to the boys, they’ve seen a piece of cloth floating on the water more than once from a far corner but they never took a keen interest, till it drew closer to where they normally bath. They then realized it was a body before informing police officers at Matunda police station.
Kiptum said his officers visited the scene, and with help from locals, they managed to retrieve the body adding it was suspected it must have stayed for several days because it had decomposed.
With preliminary investigations failing to trace the identity of the lady, Kiptum has called on members of the public from Kakamega, Bungoma and Uasin Gishu Counties to help
establish her identity. “I call upon anybody who might have lost a female relative aged about 30 years to come and help identify this body,” said Kiptum.
The residents have called on the government to help them cover the quarry which was dug, abandoned and uncovered by a Chinese road construction company which was constructing roads in the neighbouring Uasin Gishu County, arguing that the quarry posed a lethal threat to them.
The police officers took the body to Kitale Hospital mortuary for postmortem.
