President Uhuru Kenyatta has called for diversification of crop production in Western Kenya, saying the move will boost farming in the region.
While assuring cane farmers of his Government’s commitment to revive sugar factories in the region, President Kenyatta said relying on cane growing only will deny the farmers the opportunity to exploit fully the production capacity of their farms.
“Let us diversify our production to include horticulture and dairy farming so that we can have a continuous source of income instead of focusing on only one crop,” President Kenyatta said.
President Kenyatta emphasized his Government’s readiness to work with all leaders in serving Kenyans without discrimination.
He disclosed that plans were underway put up milk cooling plants in every constituency to promote dairy farming. The President said he was also consulting with leaders from the region to ensure that factories that had collapsed including the Webuye Pan Paper mill are revived.
“These are the developments that we want to discuss with leaders about, so that we can assist our farmers and improve the lives of Kenyans,” President Kenyatta said.
