According to an eyewitness, the accident occurred at about 10:20 am after the matatu driver carelessly tried to drive and join the main road without seeing an approaching truck after picking passengers at the junction stage.
The truck which was travelling from Eldoret towards Webuye collided with the Matatu forcing it to veer off the road and landed in a ditch. The conductor, who was dangling at the entrance, was pressed down by the vehicle. The locals managed to lift the matatu and rescued the conductor who had been trapped under it.
The matatu which was also travelling towards Webuye had 13 passengers on board when the accident occurred with four of them, including the conductor, sustaining serious injuries while the rest escaped unhurt.
The injured were rushed to Lugulu mission hospital in the neighbouring Bungoma County.
The matatu driver fled the scene after the incident and police have launched an investigation with an aim of arresting and prosecuting him.
The accident occurred merely two days after another one that occurred
in the area on Monday morning where one person was seriously injured.
