A family in Tuwani ward, Saboti constituency of Trans Nzoia County wants to sell their two children or give them away for free to any willing person because of the high poverty level that has gripped them. Jacob Angusi and his wife Susan said they made the decision because they are unable to cater for the family, and they don’t want to watch as the children, aged 9 and 3 years, suffer.
The two are HIV positive and have lived with the virus for the past five years. Angusi said the financial problems started when he was working in a hotel in Kisumu. The management didn’t pay him his salary for three months, and he couldn’t cater for his family as a result. He, later on, moved to Kitale and together with his family, they lived in rental houses but still, he couldn’t provide for his family and even contemplated suicide. “I had contemplated committing suicide after killing my wife and the children first because I couldn’t withstand the hopeless life we were living,” he said.
Susan Angusi said she convinced the husband about the decision to sell the children to any person who might offer the necessary help they needed, saying she doesn’t regret the decision after what they’ve been through. She said she hopes the situation will be sorted out soon enough so that the children can live their lives normally.
