Bungoma County Government through the ministry of Agriculture has been urged to seek for alternative means of reviving coffee farming as a way of creating job opportunities.
This was stated by the MCA for Kabuchai Chwele ward James Mukhongo who said that coffee farming has been a backbone for residents for a long period therefore when revived will take care of youths who are jobless.
“The county should ensure that coffee farmers are also assisted the way maize farmers are assisted because it is only through this that our youths can get employment hence catering for the problem of joblessness that is facing our youths,” Said Mukhongo.
He added that coffee farming can contribute much to the county’s economy if proper measures will be taken to ensure that the challenges coffee farmers go through when dealing with the crop are minimized.
“Coffee farming can help fight poverty if it is taken seriously, supporting coffee farmers will encourage them to engage in the farming thus contribute to the economy of the county,” He added
Mukhongo said that regions that participate in coffee farming should be given priority when it comes to distribution of subsidized fertilizer so that farmers can be able to practice the coffee farming in the right manner.
He urged that the farmers should also work together with coffee research institutes so that they get right seeds for planting to increase their produce.
“The county should also liaise with coffee research institutes and enable farmers get good seeds for planting that will enable them increase coffee produce,” he reiterated.
