A saloon car driver escaped death by a whisker after his vehicle was hit by a train in Lumakanda location, Lugari Sub County. According to an eyewitness the accident occurred at about 10 am on Monday when the car driver, who was driving along the Soweto–Kipkaren road carelessly tried to cross the railway without paying attention to an approaching train. His car was hit by the train and pushed more than 100 meters away.
“I was standing here talking to my friend when we heard the train
hooting; I thought my friend had tied his cows close to the railway line where they normally graze. However, when we turned our attention there, we saw the car trying to cross the railway line but it was too late as the train hit and shoved it by a distance,” said the witness.
The driver managed to jump out of the vehicle and rolled away as it was being steadily shoved. He sustained minor injuries and was taken to Lumakanda Sub County hospital for treatment.
Police officers from Eldoret Railway station post visited the scene and towed the car away as the train which was ferrying cargo from the Kenyan Coast destined for Malaba at the Kenya–Uganda border continued to its destination.
