The Court of Appeal has granted seven more days to the doctors’ union officials and mediators to find a solution to the ongoing doctors’ strike. The Appellate judges Hannah Okwengu, Sankale Ole Kantai, and Fatuma Sichale indicated they were happy with the negotiations progress.
KMPDU lawyers, led by Senator James Orengo, requested for seven more days but the council of governors’ lawyer was opposed to the ruling, citing that the matter has taken too long and that two days would be enough. The lawyers said they have found solutions to some problems with only a few issues pending.
The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights asked the court to consider the mediation team’s position since the talks are before them. The Law Society of Kenya and KNCHR are leading the talks.
The KMPDU officials had been sentenced to a month in jail due to contempt of court but were released after the case was taken to the court of appeal. The officials attended the court’s proceedings, as both parties look to find a solution sooner rather than later.
