Acting Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has called for the deregistration of all driving schools. Speaking after a meeting with stakeholders in the Transport Sector in Nairobi, CS Matiang’i faulted driving schools which give licenses to unqualified drivers, “We have to be firm on driving schools in the country. My proposal is that we basically deregister all of them and register them afresh so that we know who is qualified to run a driving school because we are giving licenses to murderers,” said the CS.
He said it’s alarming that there is no yearly health review for drivers, given that one may develop eye problems or mental health issues and still be allowed to drive without any objections.
He further revealed that a team will be set up to deal with the pertinent issues, “In seven days a team will be put together that will prescribe regulations and conditions to fulfill before being registered as a driving school, including fulfilling medical conditions,” said CS Matiang’i.
Reforms are also being carried out in the Traffic Police Department, and he said the process is going on now, “We are equally frustrated that the ongoing review of the police force identified 127 trfaffic police officers who were earlier kicked out and came back with court orders to continue what they are doing now on the roads,” he said, “Am calling upon all of us to do their part, even members of the judiciary, they live in this country. We can’t have police officers being disciplined from wherever they are taking bribes and they come back with court orders.”
