A truck driver escaped death by a whisker on Monday morning after he was involved in a grisly road accident near Kabrengu junction along the Webuye–Eldoret highway in Matete, Kakamega County.
Confirming the incident, Kivaywa sub location assistant chief Mr. Alex Koricho, said the lorry was heading towards Webuye from Eldoret when the accident occurred at about 9 o’clock.
Mr. Koricho said the lorry veered off the road and rolled after the driver was unable to control it as it sped down the steep Chimoil slope following brakes’ failure.
“The truck veered off the road and crashed, seriously injuring the driver,” said Mr. Koricho
The driver who was alone in the truck was rescued from the wrecked vehicle by good Samaritans and rushed to a nearby health facility in Webuye.
Several villagers who live near the scene of the accident had already gathered around it with all manner of tools ready loot its content before police arrived on time and stopped them.
Meanwhile, Mr. Koricho has appealed to motor vehicle drivers to be extremely cautious, while descending the Chimoi slope which is a black spot.
He further warned residents against the habit of looting from vehicles involved in accidents along the highway adding that those who will be found should be prepared to face the consequences.
The truck was ferrying several tones of rice destined for a neighbouring country when the accident occurred.
