The Ministry of Education has been urged to consider funding schools’ music festivals to enable many schools to participate. Financial constraints pose the main challenge for many schools when it comes to music festivals.
Speaking to West Media during the secondary schools’ music festivals competition at Kapsabet Boys High school, Nandi County chairman in charge of the festivals Mr Robert Koech, who is also the region chairman, appealed to the Ministry to cater for such events which promote unity and diversity.
Koech cited that the school managements cater for students’ training, food, and transportation during the music festivals and many of them may not be able to afford these costs.
He also highlighted the need to balance academics and co-curricular activities given that some schools focus more on academics and don’t have enough time for such competitions.
The music festivals kicked off officially on 17th May after the completion of the music festivals for primary schools which took two days. The festival involves all schools, both public and private schools, and has over forty different categories.
The competitions range from music, dance competitions which include cultural and folk dance songs from different tribes in Kenya. The main aim of the competition is to showcase and nurture talent in schools.
