At least 15 people have died and more than 50 injured in a fire that razed parts of Gikomba market very early on Thursday. The injured have been rushed to different hospitals and although the cause of the fire is yet to be established, it’s believed it started from the timber yard section.
Rescue and search teams are on the ground and precautionary measures have been taken to ensure there is an efficient operation, including clearing buildings, given that in the morning, there were gas cylinders which exploded.
The fire incidences at Gikomba market have raised many eyebrows, with cases reported frequently and yearly doing little to kill speculations. The market is visibly congested and there definitely will be calls to investigate properly and deal with any pending and unsolved issues revolving around the state of the market to avert more disasters.
