Two middle-aged people from Chemarmar area in Kiptuiya ward, Nandi county are nursing injuries after they were maimed by a stray hippo. The two, who were trailing the stray hippo before being attacked, are currently admitted at the Kapsabet referral hospital. Other residents sustained small injuries and were treated and discharged.
According to an eyewitness, the animal was seen yesterday at River Yala by some young men, who decided to stealthily follow it.
The hippo is said to have headed to Sicho from R. Yala, then Cheptaburbur and Siksik streams where it caused havoc to tea and maize plantations through the night before arriving at Chemarmar area. Residents tried to corner it but it retaliated, injuring some of them.
Kenya Wildlife Service rangers from Nandi arrived at the promptly after being briefed about the situation and killed the animal.
