Pollution of Kapsabet town by the abattoir prompts action from NEMA

NEMA Nandi County director has promised to tour Kapsabet’s slaughter house following numerous complaints from members of the public over foul smell from the facility.

The director, Michael Komen, told West Fm that he would visit the place to confirm the condition and ensure that action was done to stop the horrid smell.

Residents had complained for the past one month over the foul smell from the facility and accused the municipal and NEMA of doing nothing against it despite receiving complaints at their offices.

Richard Kemboi, a landlord living next to the slaughter house said that the stench had forced many of his clients to seek better places away from the area.

“I have already lost two clients because of the horrid smell and others too are threatening to leave. I hope that the matter would be solved so that business can go on well,” he said.

Komen however denied receiving any report over the matter and said that it had been long since he personally visited the place.

“I cannot make any comment for now because it has been long since I inspected the facility.”

Kapsabet mayor Michael Rono could not be reached for comment but his deputy Rose Ngeny said that she will report the matter to public health officer so that action can be done.

“I will report the matter so that proper action can be done. We have a department to solve the matter,” she said.

Residents also expressed fear over hygienic condition of meat that they usually purchase from various butcheries in town saying that the deteriorating condition of the slaughter house might be affecting it.

Led by Kemboi, the residents charged that the municipality was avoiding its provision of services because their term was almost coming to an end while NEMA was negligent in execution of its duties.

The complaint came barely two weeks after environmentalists led by chairman of Friends of Nandi Environment Dr. John Chumo protested over the continued dumping of solid waste next to the hospital.

Chumo claimed that the dumping of waste near the hospital was posing danger to its patients and staff, a statement that was also reiterated by Medical Superintendent Dr. Edward Serem.

On his part, Kapsabet mayor had stated that another dumpsite had been proposed and promised that relocation would be done.

“It is not easy to get another land but we have finally found one and we shall then dump solid waste there,” Rono said.

However, up to date no relocation has been done and the municipal has continued to receive protection from Komen who said that he had given them up to mid this year to relocate.

Komen said, “I have given them up to mid this year and if they do not relocate, I will take action.”
