Farmers from Bunyala Irrigation Scheme participated in a two days training workshop for production of hybrid rice with an aim of helping them adopt new farming technologies organized by Lake Basin board members in collaboration with Bayer Crop Science which specializes on disease and pest management.
Addressing the participants on the occasion, Training manager Mr. Gabriel Obuche advised farmers to always identify disease in early stages once the crop starts germinating so that so that when it comes to harvesting period there they are able to get good yields.
“Bunyala is highly affected by high rate of diseases than other areas simple because most farms have been eaten up by diseases leading to low yield, research is being conducted to identify what could be the real cause of the disease,” said Obuche.
Obuche also advised farmers to apply chemicals on weeds after 35 days once paddy has been dried to enable the chemical to penetrate on the weeds when they are on the surface using the chemical known as killer gold.
Further, they were told to adopt new transplanting method known as line transplanting which is recommended in new cropping standard by Lake Basin because of its high yield and easy to weed unlike random transplanting which gives a challenge during weeding hence low yield.
“Rice should not be harvested before it is ready because when it’s taken to be tested on moisture level, it might lose its quality demand in the market,” noted Obuche. Switch to Our Mobile Site |
