The Bungoma County team that emerged the winners of the Vestergaard Frandsen Football Tournament held at kakamega High School with an aim of creating awareness of safe clean drinking water.

Bungoma County was crowned the champions of Vestergaard Frandsen Football tournament held at Kakamega High School Grounds after trouncing Busia County in the finals over the weekend.

The two teams held each other to defensive plays with numerous missed chances that bore a non-productive first half of the game for the fans for both sides.

However, the tide changed during the second half of the game began on a more electrifying display with players demonstrating a variety of skills with the hope of carrying the day. The teams relentlessly put up a spirited fight in search of goals but all was in vain closing the second half on a barren draw.

During the finals, four players were named as the ‘best football talent’ having been scouted from each county during the tournament in what organizers say is deliberate attempt to nurture talent in the region. The four players include: Rooney Sichenje from Bungoma County, Philips Onyango from Busia County, Mandela Kulondo from Kakamega County and Brian Onzere from Vihiga County.

Roars and cheers from Machina, Isikhuti,  Zangalewa and Kamaliza Sounds entertained the crowds throughout the game rousing the perceive titans  to an equally frustrating stand-off during the penalties after the two teams tied 4 - 4. This prompted the referee to preside over the second round which saw Bungoma emerge winners with a 5 - 4 score line.

The Vestergaard Frendsen sponsored tourney is organized to create awareness on the importance of drinking clean water using the Lifestraw - water purifiers.

Vestergaard Frandsen Regional Manager Mr. Steve Otieno said the tournament was part of the VF activities aimed at sensitizing school going children on safe drinking water and also use children as agents of change to influence positive behaviour within their respective communities.

“We are committed to ensuring that every family here lives a healthy life which we are propagating through sports and provision of sustainable solutions like the Lifestraw filters, “said Mr Otieno.

The winners took home a championship trophy, medals and branded Lifestraw Merchandise and certificates of recognition.

Earlier, Kakamega county played Vihiga Country in the day’s curtain raiser match  that so the hosts (Kakamega County) beat their semi finals rival Vihiga to a 3 – 2 victory.
