Police officers in Busia town on Sunday recovered an AK 47 rifle at Burumba B estate near Deity academy.
According to Busia OCPD Kenneth Kimani, they suspect it was one of the fire arms that thugs have been using in the area to terrorize area residents following the increased spate of insecurity.
“We believe it is one of the fire arms that thugs have been using to undertake their criminal activities,” he said.
Speaking to journalists in Busia town, Kimani said the officers managed to recover the fire arm following reports from children who were playing near the area where the equipment had been hidden.
“As the children were playing they spotted the AK 47 rifle a move that attracted their attention prompting them to inform the police officers who rushed to the scene immediately,” said Kimani.
He disclosed that one suspect has been apprehended in line with the recovered fire arm after he was allegedly caught with a mobile phone of a victim who was attacked by thugs in the area some few days ago.
The OCPD said they have launched investigations and will present the fire arm to experts to ascertain whether there is any connection with the suspect arrested.
He however, urged Busia residents to embrace a close working relationship with security agencies through reporting individuals suspected to raise tension in the area in a bid to curb the increased cases of insecurity.
“Though we have intensified our patrols in town, we advise local residents to cooperate with the police officers by ensuring they provide any vital information to ensure those individuals involved in criminal activities are netted,” said Kimani, adding that they should also own whistles to use them in raising alarm in case of any danger.
The recovery of the AK 47 comes as area residents raise alarm over the criminal activities that have continued to be undertaken by unknown gangs in the area. Switch to Our Mobile Site |
