The Lugari county council councillors

A section of councilors from Lugari County Council have challenged the government to audit their activities.

Led by the council chairperson Mr. David Amaswache, the councilors said this when they addressed a press conference after holding a meeting inside the council’s boardroom Tuesday.

The civic leaders were responding to remarks made by Lugari Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) branch chairperson Mr. Nabii Nabwera last weekend.

While addressing ODM officials at Spring Park Hotel in Turbo over the weekend, Nabwera alleged that several cases of corruption and related scandals were taking place at the council and vowed to make a formal request asking the government through the ministry of local government to investigate the matter.

Praising Lugari county council for being the best managed in whole of western province, Mr. Amaswache dared the ODM boss to make good his threats and ask Minister for Local Government Mr. Fred Gumo to send a team of auditors from Nairobi to the area.

“Let Nabii Nabwera stop issuing threats. We want him to even ask the minister himself accompany his audit team to our council. We don’t have anything to hide,” said Amaswache.

Mr. Amaswache, however, said that the councilors were ready to resign and face the law if auditors implicated them in any scandals involving public funds.

Dismissing Nabwera’s calls asking ODM councilors who had moved to United Democratic Front (UDF) to resign, the councilors vowed to stay put until when parliament shall be dissolved and their seats declared vacant.
