Residents of Tulumba location in Bumula district have appealed to the government to step in and stop unnecessary harassment from the administration police officers at Bumula camp.
The residents who requested for anonymity said the police who were posted in the area two months ago purposely to beef up security are now indulging in harassing the locals especially at drinking sprees.
The locals blamed the police for insensitivity saying they should strategize on how to curb criminal activities in the location as opposed to harassing locals.
“We requested the administration police to be deployed here purposely to deal with criminal activities, instead, the officers are now harassing us , the government should come in strongly and direct the officers to focus on their fundamental duties,’’ one resident charged.
The residents said the administration police officers are always reluctant to respond to criminal incidents in the region while asserting that they are swift when going for illicit brews.
“We are not opposed to the fight against illicit brews, but our main concern is that the officers are corrupt because they are busy soliciting for money from illicit brewers, is taking money from illicit brewers fighting or encouraging the malpractice,’’ one resident wondered.
As such, they have appealed to the Bumula District Commissioner Raphael Muiruri to transfer the officers while alleging that they are incompetent and unprofessional.
“What is the need of the police officers here if at all they harassing us on our way home, the officers should ensure we are secure instead of harassing us, and sometimes they are in civilian clothes a situation that makes it difficult to differentiate between them and criminals,’’ they charged.
On the other hand the bodaboda operators also accused the administration police for harassment including demanding for money from them.
“This people are harassing us for no good reason, the moment you pump into them as early as 7pm you must be ready to part with any amount money they will demand from you, we are tired and they must leave this place if they are not ready to change and focus on matters of security,’’ they said.
The police officers were posted in the area two months ago following a rise in criminal activities in the region where five people were brutally killed by unknown armed people within a spell of one month. Switch to Our Mobile Site |
