As the International Olympics Day is set to be marked this weekend, 25 primary schools in Bungoma County have received sport kits from an international company geared towards identifying and nurturing talents at early age.
The coordinator of the Olympics committee in Bungoma County Mr. John Mukenya said the sports kits are meant to encourage and promote sporting activities in primary schools.
Mr. Mukenya said pupils in primary schools have talents in sports but they lack proper sport kits to enable them realize their full potential.
The heads of school that benefited from the support applauded the National Olympics committee under the chairmanship of Dr. Kipchoge Keino for necessitating the support saying the sports kits will be of great value in their respective schools.
Apart from the sports kits, the coordinator disclosed that the 25 schools will also receive 1000 tree seedlings each in order to establish Olympic Gardens on school compounds.
“We want to ensure that pupils have a place where they can rest after playing on the fields,’’ he said.
He said the essence of establishing Olympic Gardens is not only meant to provide a shade but also to promote vegetation cover in schools to avoid vandalism incase of storms.
“Today we have planted 1000 trees in Bungoma D.E.B but the remaining 24 schools will receive the seedlings within one week to establish the gardens,’’ Mukenya disclosed.
The coordinator appealed to schools heads and parents to allow and support pupils to nurture their sports talents saying they should discourage the norm that pupils participating in sports perform poorly academically.
“In fact the sporting activities freshens the mind of pupils, let us give our children a chance to do what their best at without any discrimination,’’ he urged.
