With the new realignment of the salary structure of 133, 322 civil servants who will get a salary increment of between 12%-20% depending on their job groups, teachers have been left out in the new salary adjustments that will see the total increment of the salaries to 53% since July 2007.
Public Service Minister Dalmas Otieno revealed that teachers will not benefit from the new increment since according to the act they usually do a collective bargain. “The new structure is crucial for it will restore harmony and equity and provide a level ground for which the Salaries and Remuneration Commission can rationalize remuneration in the Public Service,” he added.
The 12%-20% salary increment for Civil servants in job groups A, A-T, A-L and M-T, will have their salaries realigned upwards with effect from 1st of this month.
National Youth Service Officers are among the public servants set to benefit even though the minister clarified that their salaries cannot be realigned to be in tandem with those of Kenya Police, Administration Police and the Prisons.
The Minister reiterated that salary increment in the public sector will no longer be awarded on basis of agitation, but on universally acknowledged remuneration factors.
This comes a day after Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) threatened to hold a nationwide teachers strike by September if the government does not respond to their 300 per cent salary increment demand. KNUT Secretary General David Okuta called upon teachers to prepare to down their tools immediately the whistle will be blown. Switch to Our Mobile Site |
