Vihiga residents have been urged to collect their Identification Cards (IDs) at the registration bureau in order to take part in the ongoing mass voter registration. The Sub County Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) coordinator Benson Isuza said about 15,000 Identification documents for the region were lying idle at the registry.
“We’ve been in talks with the registrar of persons and they will help us in this exercise by setting up mobile centers at polling stations where we will be registering voters,” said Isuza.
He said the one-month exercise has been scheduled in all the four wards in the Sub County that include Lugaga-Wamuluma, Mungoma central Maragoli and South Maragoli.
Isuza said the Sub County will have a total of 16 Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) kits to help in the registration exercise.
“Every ward will have four kits and this would help in enlisting more voters in the ongoing mass voter registration,” said Isuza.
He called on local politicians and religious leaders to mobilize citizens to register in large numbers to ensure they participate in the coming elections.
He added that they have made a schedule to visit different polling stations on a day to day basis to cover more voters.
He added that Vihiga Sub County has enlisted 1760 new voters, Sabatia 3729, Hamisi 2811, Luanda 2611 and Emuhaya 1779.
Isuza said poor publicity had led to a low turnout of voters and urged the locals to register meet the set targets by IEBC.
