Speaking in his constituency Kibunguchy argued that it was not possible for each of the 47 counties to hire doctors and expect things to run smoothly in the health sector.
“We must go back to the drawing board and have a referendum that will see the health function taken back to the national government for proper management so that the problem of strikes can be dealt with once and for all,” said Dr. Kibunguchy.
The legislator challenged Health Cabinet Secretary Cleopa Mailu to borrow a leaf from his Education counterpart Fred Matiang’i by introducing reforms in the sector.
According to the lawmaker, the mayhem in the health sector could worsen incase county governments continue running the sector. “Having 48 employers for health workers cannot work, counties should just let it go for the sake of Kenyans,” he said.
This comes as the defiant doctors continue with their strike despite the Council of Governors (CoG) and industrial court directive to end their strike and report to work.
Dr. Kibunguchy argues that things will fall in place once health goes back to the central government. “It will be easy for the CS to look into health matters and handle early to avert strikes,” he said.
