Three more KCSE candidates are likely to be deregistered due to exam cheating, according to KNEC chairman Prof. George Magoha. Speaking on Wednesday, the KNEC chairman said the three will be deregistered after the set procedures are followed and that it likely won’t be the last group deregistered as the Ministry officials continue to keep a close eye on the whole exercise. Four candidates have already been deregistered due to exam malpractice since the KCSE exams begun.
Magoha said the right procedures are followed before deregistering any candidates found with a phone in the exam room. He cited a case where two students from one of the North Eastern Counties were caught with cellphones in the exam room, and with the cellphone still on, answers started streaming in, “At the end of the test, there was a person who was asking for money to be sent to them,” he revealed, adding that law enforcement agencies tracked the culprits. The KNEC boss said at the moment, exams are being done for candidates in universities and special rooms by teachers who are posing as experts, opening a whole new world to exam cheating.
He also said the schools which were listed by the Education Ministry as cheating hotspots were put under close surveillance and that the candidates who’ve been impounded so far haven’t come from those schools. However, he noted that a small number of centre managers are allowing exam papers to be opened before commencement of the tests and also allowing phones, “We will definitely catch them at the marking process and you can be very sure that the exams will be cancelled,” he said.
